Quality in mainstream popular music – no more?
…not a subject to be addressed with a quick soundbite or two. The lack of truly inspiring music in the mainstream is a big part of what inspires us to continue the work on the Artsboretum project.
Joel Selvin, in a recent article blasting the lack of really inspirational pop music, states: “With the music business in virtual free-fall for the past half-dozen or more years, conservative forces have taken charge and their stranglehold has squeezed out of the industry whatever vestiges of fun and adventure that made the record industry exciting in the first place.” Read the whole article here: SF GATE
We are of the opinion that there is really no quality coming from the majors – whatever is left of the majors – because they haven’t really invested in artist development in a long time.
Yes – it is great that artists now have more freedom than ever to make and distribute their music – and while there may be quality music out there – how does anyone know how to find these artists? – American Idol breaks more new acts than record companies these days – and that is little more than an updated marketing tool for the old industry – which still equates to little more than indentured servitude to the large machine. And while Carrie Underwood can actually sing, her songs aren’t exactly on the same level of Joni Mitchell…
Please join us in preserving the best of the old, so we can provide a new generation with the tools and skill to reach their true creative potential.
